Tallest Cylinder (10 lb)
Largest platter (15 lb)
Most bowls thrown off the hump in 3 minutes (there will be specific perimeters on qualifying sizes)
The competition will be judged by Claude Smith & Curtis Dinwiddie. Clay will be provided by WNMU Expressive Arts Department. First prize trophy will be created by Jean-Robert Beffort. Other prizes provided by Leyba & Ingalls Arts.
CLAY had a tent with demonstrations and free hands-on activities at last weekend's Blues Festival. Local artists Krissy Ramirez, Patty Countryman, and Zoe Wolfe demonstrated hand-building and wheel throwing techniques, and children were encouraged to take a whirl at throwing on the wheel! Children of all ages - and a few adults - were thrilled to have a chance to get their hands dirty for 5-10 minutes on the wheel.
Master artist Oralia Lόpez from Mata Ortiz, Chihuahua will be demonstrating the intricate technique used to paint pottery including elegant forms, precision designs and beautiful colors on Saturday, July 29 from 10am-4pm.
At 11:00 am, and 1:00 pm, Dr. John Bezy, author of the book The Artistry and History of Mata Ortiz, will be making a presentation about the prehistoric roots of modern Mata Ortiz ceramics. Oralia will have a wonderful selection of work by many other fine Mata Ortiz artists for purchase at reasonable prices starting at $20.
Please join us for the demonstration, presentation, and sale. For more information please telephone the Silver City Museum 575-538-5921.
This event will take place in conjunction with the juried CLAYfest Market, which is another opportunity to purchase decorative and utilitarian ceramics and other clay-related items directly from CLAY artists.
