The CLAY Festival is the recipient of a grant from Wells Fargo to fund this year’s CLAYPlay! In keeping with the farm-to-table theme of Clay Festival and with inspiration from the book The Moon Was at a Fiesta, this years CLAYPlay will focus on the three sisters: squash, corn, and beans. In free workshops taught by local artists Zoe Wolfe and Kathryn Allen, participants will create clay bas relief tiles, slab bowls and masks. All the work will be fired and put on display at the public library where it was constructed, then returned to participants. Workshops will take place at the Bayard, Gila Valley and Silver City Public Libraries during the week of CLAY Festival, July 22-30. The funds provided by Wells Fargo will allow the purchase of books for children who participate in these educational workshops. The project proposed is an important component of the CLAY Festival, which provides educational and experiential opportunities for students, teachers, local artists, small business proprietors and community members. Via the medium of clay, children will be given the opportunity to explore local culture and examine the historical role clay has played in our community from the past to the present.
