$325/person - NON-CREDITED COURSE PRICE**
*A beginner, for example, is a student with experience in drawing/painting wishing to cross over into clay work. Students without prior throwing experience will be hand-building only.
This hands-on workshop will focus on building a personal approach to working with imagery (representational or abstract) on clay. It will cover colored slips, stains, simple wall mounting systems, tiles and 3-D forms. Students should bring sketches, ideas, and doodles to put on clay. Demonstrations, slides, group discussion.
Students will be encouraged to explore either hand-building or wheel techniques though there will not be an emphasis on teaching wheel throwing skills. The course will focus on drawing and painting on clay, and so, this class would be suitable for experienced drawing /painting students with little to no clay experience, although students interested in the wheel throwing portion will require prior experience. Students are encouraged to bring sketches, visual resources and ideas for imagery they would like to explore.
We will fire all the work we are able to fire in a one-week class, though students may expect to take some bisque work home. To facilitate our work with color and fast turn around of work we will emphasize earthenware firing.
If you can't make the workshop, Bede will be giving a lecture at the beginning of the workshop on Monday morning that is open to the public as part of the CLAY lecture series. An exhibition of his work will be hosted at Bear Mountain Lodge with a reception on Weds, July 26th.
Note to participants: There will be an option to purchase a box lunch delivered to the workshop for $9 (cash only, will be collected at workshop). Box lunch will include a sandwich (vegetarian option available), chips, cookie, fruit, and bottled water. Other options for lunch are the campus cafeteria and visiting one of the many local restaurants.
